Jan Elaine Thomas (née Brundige) of Columbia, MD died Friday, April 26, 2024 after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Dr. Roger Thomas, who spent his career at Goddard Space Flight Center. She is survived by her daughter Elaine Bailey (Reid), of Charlottesville, VA, her grandchildren Julia and Linwood, her siblings Kay Bower, Ray Brundige and Lisa Friedlander, and other cherished members of her extended family. She would also like to be remembered by Noel White of New Hampshire.
Jan was a proud graduate of the University of Michigan and worked as a computer programmer at IBM prior to raising Elaine. After moving many times during her childhood, she and Roger settled down in the Phelps Luck neighborhood of the then-new town of Columbia, living in the same house for over 50 years. A lifelong cat lover, she adored her two current cats, Samantha and Dusty, who were a source of endless comfort and entertainment over this past decade, especially since losing Roger. Jan loved her family, regularly communicating with Elaine and her family every Sunday evening, her siblings, and many other family members. Her weekly bridge games were an anchor of her life, and she loved long chats over lunch with friends. She enjoyed reading, watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, and following British TV series. Her quick mind and love of words were put to use daily through her mastery of puzzles and crosswords. She will be greatly missed for her kindness and quiet intelligence.
A memorial will be held at a later date.
