

LaVerne Anderson passed away peacefully on August 25, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. The daughter of Henry and Sheals Anderson, Ms. Anderson lived a life dedicated to education, music, and service to her community. Born on June 2, 1938, in Newport News, Virginia, Ms. Anderson graduated from
Phenix High School, where her passion for learning and music became evident early on. She pursued her love of music at Hampton Institute, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. While there, she joined the sorority Zeta Phi Beta. Her educational journey continued at Atlanta University, where she achieved a
Masters of Library Science, a testament to her commitment to knowledge and scholarship. Ms. Anderson devoted much of her professional career to Norfolk State University, where she served as a librarian. Outside of her professional life, Ms. Anderson was an accomplished organist and pianist. She shared her musical talents with several local churches, where she accompanied Sunday services and performed for special events as a member of the bell choir. Her music brought joy and comfort to many and reflected her deep faith and love for her community. During the last five years of her life, she relocated to Columbia, Maryland to be closer to her family. LaVerne Anderson is survived by her sister Anne and brother-in-law Dr. Frank Hamilton, as well as her beloved nieces: Lisa Anne Hamilton, Robin Hamilton and her husband Mark Falzone, Allison Hamilton, Jamie Hamilton and her husband Garland Malloy. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 11 AM at the Hampton Memorial Gardens, 155 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, Virginia. The family welcomes expressions of sympathy and encourages donations in Ms.
Anderson’s memory to the I. Sherman Greene Chorale of Norfolk, Virginia.
