David Ullom Hendrey was born on November 20th, 1942 in Wilmette, IL and passed away on May 31st, 2023. He was 80 years old. He and his beloved, Joan Mary Pollard, lived 29 happy years together on their lovely 26 acre farm in Hallsville, MO. They shared their love for their seven horses, and various adored cats and dogs who lived very contented lives with them.
David attended New Trier High School. He and his brothers, Tom, Rob and Bill were all excellent swimmers. They were all important assets to the swim team and helped to propel the team to win many swim meets and remain #1 in the league for many years. After graduation, David served in the US Navy as an Aviation Electronics Technician from 1960 through 1963. After he was honorably discharged, he attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM. He graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Business Administration and Marketing degree.
David had a long, dedicated and rewarding career in Credit Union marketing and administration. Starting in the early 70’s, he worked as Marketing Manager, Director and President of several different Credit Unions in Chicago, Aurora and Oak Park, Illinois. In 1996, He moved to Columbia, MO, and began a long and happy career as President of the Columbia Credit Union. He retired in 2016. True to his kind and willing nature, he and his staff would dress up in various themed outfits every year and participate in the Rootin’ Tootin’ Chili Cook off to raise money for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Columbia. He dressed up in western wear, as a pirate, and even dressed as a huge red chili pepper. He was devoted to the Columbia Credit Union and was a fun loving man who didn’t take himself too seriously!
His early years were spent helping to raise his two sons, Todd and Stephen Hendrey. He loved them very much. They went on wilderness adventures, paddling canoes, target shooting with shotguns and overnight camping. Both sons have wonderful memories of their time shared together and said that they are happy to have had such a loving and good father. He will be deeply missed and remembered with great love by both sons.
He was a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He served as Treasurer for Chapter W of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. He greatly enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow friends and cyclists and he and Joanie enjoyed the many fun outings that this great group hosted: fun dinners and motorcycle rides. He also enjoyed taking long trips on his Gold Wing motorcycle and rode to both the East and West coasts and into Canada with his brother, Tom. He was also an avid bowler and bowled on leagues for many years.
He enjoyed the role of a caring step-father to adult children: Stacy Wright, Roger Tweet, DJ Searle and Stephanie Tweet. Trips together to Breckinridge, Colorado at the Valdoro Lodge during the summertime together were favorite times. There was great dining, hiking and sightseeing. We would ride bicycles down the Vail mountain bike trail. He was a good, kind man who made these wonderful trips possible!
David is survived by his two sons: Todd (Betsy) Hendrey, of DeKalb, IL, Stephen (Deanna) Hendrey of Cary, IL, and grandchildren: Carson and Kendall Hendrey of Cary, IL; his stepsons: Roger Tweet of Hallsville, MO and DJ (Susan Sczepanski) Searle of Columbia, MO, and stepdaughter Stephanie Tweet of Colorado Springs, CO; his two brothers, Rob (Carole) Hendrey of Ocala, FL, and Tom (Jeri) Hendrey of California presently living in Italy. He will be missed by nieces and nephews; Shannon, Sarah, Danny, Steve, Cheryl and Margaret. David was preceded in death by his parents: Waldersee Brazier and Irene Ruth Hendrey and his brother, William Hendrey, who left us in May of 2017. His stepdaughter, Stacy Wright, passed away in December of 2021.
David you are loved and missed so very much.
