Haden Leon Henderson passed away peacefully on the early morning hours of January 20, 2025, after a gradual decline in health. Throughout this experience, he was supported and received outstanding care from his loving daughter, granddaughter, and caregivers during the last days of his life.
Haden was born on June 15, 1938, in Columbia, Missouri. He was the second of five children born to the late Howard Henderson and Dorothy (Johnson) Henderson. In addition to his parents, Haden was preceded in death by his siblings.
Haden grew up in Columbia, MO, where he attended Frederick Douglas High School, graduating with the class of 1956. During his high school years, Haden played football and enjoyed many other extracurricular activities. He remained a sports enthusiast throughout his life and enjoyed watching and repping his favorite NFL team, the Kansas City Chiefs.
Haden Henderson married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Mae Thornton, on May 31, 1966. Shortly thereafter, Haden and his new bride left their families in Columbia and relocated to Wichita, KS, to pursue their career goals and to continue his education at Wichita State University. After settling into their respective careers, in 1974, Haden and Shirley excitedly welcomed the birth of their first and only child, a daughter, Leigh Ann. Their marriage lasted for 43 years.
Haden met Doris Kelly, and they later united in marriage and resided in Rosehill, KS, until Doris passed away on January 7, 2018.
After Haden completed his secondary education, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on June 7, 1956. During his time active duty, Private First Class Haden served his country with distinction until receiving an honorable discharge on June 6, 1962.
Haden joined the Wichita Police Department in the Spring 1969 where he served with dedication for 21 years, until he retired on January 25, 1990. He began his career as a patrol officer. In 1980, Haden was promoted to a Detective, and he rose up in rank to a Lieutenant that same year. In 1986, Haden was promoted to Captain. Captain Haden became the first black police officer with the Wichita Police Department to receive the Silver Wreath of Valor for his bravery and self-sacrifice in the line of duty. This is the second highest honor to be bestowed upon an officer by the Wichita Police Department. During his 21-year career with the Wichita Police Department, Captain Haden had an unwavering commitment to upholding the law, protecting the public, and providing exemplary service to the entire community. Although modest, Captain Haden was very proud of his professional duties and the significant contribution he made to the law enforcement community and to public safety. His legacy and example of courage and strength will be remembered by those who were blessed to know him.
Haden was known for his infatuation with cars and motorcycles. If it was the latest model, he had it! He found pleasure in keeping his cars clean and his lawn manicured.
Haden was a man of faith. He remained active in his church, Surazal Christian Center, under the leadership of Pastor Larry Barber, until his health no longer allowed.
