Helen Carter, 70, of Jefferson City, MO, passed away Thursday, January 20, 2022 at Jefferson City Nursing and Rehab after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. A celebration of her life will be held later at Memorial Funeral Home.
Helen was born September 22, 1951, in Gulfport, MS, the oldest of 3, to Frank and Joyce Page Cornell. She spent her childhood in Gulfport where she graduated high school and was raised by her name-sake and grandmother, Helen Brock. She was an adored big sister and named one of her high school “beauties.” Although she was from the coast, she never learned to swim and preferred dry land over ocean. She learned to play piano at a young age and her first job was at Hallmark, a store she continued to love over the years. She was the first of her family to graduate from college; earning her Bachelor’s degree from LSU. “Laissez le bon temps rouler” was one of her favorite expressions and fit her outlook on life. After she married, she moved to Houston, TX where she resided for many years. She said the best gifts her ex-husband ever gave her were her daughter and player piano. Before her disease, she was called “motor legs” as she kept quite the walking pace to follow. She was a talented painter, loved to listen to live music, and never got rid of anything. She adored Elvis, Phantom of the Opera, Coco Cola, a good Cabernet and was a stickler for proper grammar. She didn’t care to cook as she loved going out to eat and believed, “Life is too short to eat fat-free!” She had a good sense of humor and would order PMS pizza (pepperoni, mushroom, sausage) to get a reaction. Her smile was contagious. She will be greatly missed yet her poor body is finally at peace.
She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer (Bob) Lynne Carter Dochler of Harrisburg; siblings, Frank (Dedde) Cornell, II of Boise, ID and Angela Pinkston of Biloxi, MS; her mother, Joyce Page White; a loving extended family and several nieces and nephews(including her Virgo nephew birthday twin).
Memorial Contributions may be made to the Missouri Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence at 217 Oscar Drive Ste A, Jefferson City, MO 65101 (www.mocadsv.org).
