

She was born in Monroe City, Missouri on June 23, 1936, to Mary Lucille and Lorraine Everett (LE) Ross. She graduated from Monroe City High School in 1954. She married William King Mitchell of Quincy, Illinois who preceded her in death. She then re-married to William Thomas Kelly of St. Joseph, Missouri who also preceded her in death.
Jan was employed with the University of Missouri for over 30 years in the Pathology Laboratory retiring at the age of 78. She loved her job and up until her passing, stayed in touch with many of her former co-workers. She loved cooking and was best known for her casseroles and fruit salads. Spending time with family was what she enjoyed most and loved hosting dinner at her home. Jan loved her family and friends deeply and could be described by most as kind, thoughtful and witty with a sharp sense of humor. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and loved napping while watching the games. She was an active member of the Open Door Baptist Church for over 40 years in Columbia.
She is survived by her daughters Jill (Larry) Stohs of Moscow, ID; Beth Mitchell of Coconut Creek, FL; and her son Thom (Candace) Mitchell of Jefferson City, MO; 10 grandchildren: Jordan Miller, Tanner Miller, Hunter Miller, Erin Hallman, Jennifer Stohs, Madison Pearson, Avery Mitchell, Liam Mitchell, Payton Mitchell, and Jayden Mitchell. 9 great-grandchildren: Lucie Miller, Janie Miller, Tillie Miller, Birdie Miller, Mya Hallman, Jaxon Hallman, Kingston Hallman, Kam Hallman, and Nellie Pearson, along with many family members and loved ones.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother William Milton Ross, first husband William Mitchell, second Husband William Kelly, and great-grandchildren Easton Hallman and Aaliyah Mitchell-Shocks.
To honor Jan’s wishes, she will be cremated with no formal services planned. A celebration of Jan’s life will be held on Saturday, September 30th at 1pm at the Open Door Baptist Church in Columbia.
