

On June 3, 1943, John was born to Albert and Leona (Stuetzer) Hoehne in Hannibal, Missouri. He was baptized as a child of God at Zion Lutheran Church in Palmyra, MO on July 4, 1943.
He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Gloria (Schachtsiek)Hoehne, on September 3, 1967. They were blessed with 2 children and 4 grandchildren.
John will be sadly missed by his wife, Gloria; children, Susan Mirly (Todd) of Smithton, IL; David Hoehne (Amy) of Ashland, MO ; sister, Harriet Myers (David) of Tuscaloosa, AL, brothers-in-law Lowell Schachtsiek (Marcia)and Alan Schachtsiek (Reta) both of Monroe City, MO, sister-in-law Janet Wohlers(Doug)of Danvers, IL; grandchildren, Kate Lohman(Samuel)of Ashland MO, Abby Reuter(Jacob)of Kansas City, MO; Grant Hoehne and Griffin Hoehne both of Ashland, MO; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Leona Hoehne and his father and mother-in-law, Emmett and Irene Schachtsiek.
John graduated from Palmyra High School before earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Missouri. His career in public service began in Kahoka, Missouri, where he served as a county extension agent for the University of Missouri from 1970 to 1991. He then moved to Columbia to continue his work, becoming a valued member of the University of Missouri’s Commercial Agriculture Team. After John retired in 2000, he enjoyed working on his and Gloria’s farm in northeast Missouri.
John also proudly served his country. While attending the University of Missouri, he joined ROTC and then served as an active-duty soldier in the U.S. Army for 2 years. He continued his service in the Army Reserves obtaining the rank of Captain. During his military career, he was stationed in Korea and Ft. Hood, Texas.
A man of faith and community, John was an active member of Campus Lutheran Church, where he served in many roles over the years. He especially looked forward to the fellowship of the Tuesday morning coffee group and the men’s bible study group. He was also a member of the Golden Kiwanis Club in Columbia and American Legion in Kahoka, MO, where he enjoyed giving back to others. John was a forever Mizzou Tiger fan and proud of his family’s 4 Generation Legacy Status.
Above all else, John cherished his family. He found his greatest joy in spending time with his grandchildren and was a proud supporter of their many extracurricular activities.
Funeral Services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at Campus Lutheran Church in Columbia, Missouri. Friends will be received from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the service.
Inurnment will be held at Palmyra Greenwood Cemetery, 3741 Hwy Bb, Palmyra, MO 63461, with full military honors at a later date which will be announced.
