Nancy Jo Cole, 73, of Columbia, MO, died December 6, 2025, at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, MO surrounded by her family. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 31, 1952, to Robert and Ann (Mahan) Fischer.
Nancy attended Normandy High School, graduating in 1970, and went on to earn her degree from the University of Missouri in 1974. She met the love of her life, Richard Cole, in biology class at Mizzou. The two later sat next to each other at graduation—Richard even sneaking out of his assigned seat just to be beside her—a moment they would remember for the rest of their lives.
She married Richard Cole on June 1, 1973, in St. Louis, Missouri, at Third Baptist Church. Nancy and Richard’s wedding was especially meaningful to their families, as Richard’s brother, a Catholic priest, co-officiated. It was the first marriage in that church jointly performed by both a Catholic and a Baptist minister.
To this union, two boys were born, who she was proud of every day.
Prior to retirement she worked as the Director of Cancer Registration at the University of Missouri, where she dedicated her career to supporting cancer research, data accuracy, and the mission of improving patient outcomes.
Nancy enjoyed arts and crafts, spending time shopping at Amish farms, and absolutely anything that involved her grandchildren. She also devoted many hours to volunteering at The Love Seat, serving her community with the same warm spirit she showed her family.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Cole; her two sons, Kirby and his wife Kelli, Jon and his wife Molly; her grandchildren, Macie, Brody, Cullen, Ava, and Ella; one great grandchild Murphie; and her brother Fred and his wife Susan.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Betsy—who was surely the first to welcome her into heaven.
Donations to Saint Luke’s Foundation would be greatly appreciated. If sending flowers, the family asks that you please fill the room with purple—Nancy’s favorite color and a beautiful reflection of her vibrant spirit. Support St. Luke's University Health Network
