Norris was born in Rhineland, Missouri on October 10, 1935, the son of Albert Kruse and Stella (Elsenraat) Kruse. He graduated from St. George High School, Hermann, MO, where he was on the school’s first basketball team. On February 20, 1960, in St. Louis, he was united in marriage to Alice (Castelli) Kruse, who survives. He served his country in the U.S. Army.
He was an athlete, educator and coach. His first teaching job was at Cainsville, Missouri. He earned his master’s degree in education from the University of Missouri. In 1965 he started at Jefferson Junior High, Columbia, as a teacher and coach of basketball and track. When Oakland Junior High School opened in Columbia, he coached basketball and track and was the Athletic Director, and he remained there until he retired. He played just about every sport at some time in his life. He played pool, pickleball, bowling, basketball, baseball and softball. He ran numerous marathons and played competitive softball until the end of the 2024 season and bowled until shortly before his passing. He and Alice enjoyed cruises and traveling with friends and family. Together they spent many summers in Steamboat Springs, Colorado and winters in Naples, Florida. Norris enjoyed waterfowl hunting and was an accomplished angler. He was an avid Mizzou and St. Louis Cardinals fan. He will be missed and remembered by many but most importantly he will be missed by those who lovingly called him “Papa.”
