Orvyle Helms

Orvyle H. Helms, aged 90, of Columbia, Missouri, passed away peacefully at his residence Friday, March 1st, 2024. Born May 5, 1933, in Linneus, Missouri, he was raised by his mother, Maxine Stephens. Orvyle was an alumnus of Brookfield High School and the University of Missouri. During the Korean War, he served with the US Army on stateside duty. Following his military service Orvyle returned to Brookfield, where he owned and operated a pool hall several years before relocating to Columbia. On June 12, 1976, he married his beloved Janice Sue Donahue in Columbia, with whom he shared his life until her passing in May 2022, after 46 years of marriage. Orvyle was a devoted husband, father and diligent professional, dedicating nearly five decades as a Certified Public Accountant for Columbia Auto Auction. He remained in the workforce until his health necessitated retirement.

Orvyle is survived by his children: Don Wenzel, Kevin (Kathleen) Dey, Michael "Ping-Pong" Dey, Shawn (Betsy) Dey, and Dennis Dey, along with 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Sue Helms, four sons: Vincent "Rusty" Dey, Nadaire Kim "Cool Buddy" Dey, Timothy "Daylight" Dey, and Kelly Thane Dey, a daughter, Yllonda Wenzel, and a granddaughter. Special appreciation is extended to Dennis Dey, Shawn Dey, Christina Picolet, and Sherri Dawson for their compassionate care, which enabled Orvyle to remain comfortable at home during his final months.

Visitation will be held March 23rd 2024 from 11:00am to 12:00pm at Millersburg Baptist Church, located at 1694 State Hwy WW, Fulton, MO 65251 (in Millersburg MO) followed by a memorial service. A catered luncheon will be held immediately following. Bringing your favorite dish (small side/dessert) is welcomed. If possible please text RSVPs to 573-544-8376 to help with head count. Interment at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Cemetery to be held at a later date TBD.
