Walter David Grotefend, of Josephine, Alabama, passed from this life into God's presence on Friday, August 2, 2024 at the age of 77. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to Walter and Marie Grotefend where he lived until he graduated high school. David served our country in the U.S. Air Force then lived in Columbia, Mississippi from 1970 until 1982 where he worked in health care at Marion General Hospital. He has been a resident of Josephine for the past 21 years. He was a character who enjoyed life and was fun to be around. In his presence there was always laughter and fun times that left good memories. David enjoyed motorcycles, sailboats, airplanes, Mardi Gras, Cajun cooking, and all LSU sports. He was a man of deep faith and served his Lord and his community through his membership with City Hope Church. David was also active in prison ministry. He was devoted to his family and loved them deeply. David will be remembered for his kindness and generosity.
In addition to his parents, Walter and Marie Grotefend, he was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Judith and Felix Ward; a nephew, Steven Alfonso; an aunt and uncle, Vic and Raymond Moraga; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Octavia and Lawrence Broom. David is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kathryn Grotefend; two daughters, Lisa Grotefend and Vicki McKee; three sisters, Jocelyn Connelly, Gretchen Grotefend, and Karen Grotefend; and four grandchildren, Zachary Wilkinson, Zoe Grotefend, Lanee McKee, and Gracee McKee.
A visitation for David will be held Tuesday, August 6, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Colonial Funeral Home. The funeral service, officiated by Reverend Gerald Broom, will be in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday, August 7, 2024 at 10:00 AM. He will be laid to rest in Enon Baptist Church Cemetery.
