Those who knew him best will remember a gentle spirit—steady, thoughtful, and quietly strong. Russell carried himself with a kind-hearted warmth that made people feel at ease. In everyday ways that matter most, he showed what it means to live and to treat others with care.
Russell graduated high school and went on to build a life defined by hard work and perseverance. He spent 25 years in the oilfield industry, working with various businesses including Columbia Diesel, Regan Equipment and American Warrior. Later, he worked at Auto Zone in Columbia, continuing to do what he had always done—show up, work honestly, and take pride in providing dependable effort day after day.
Away from work, Russell’s adventurous side found its home outdoors. He truly enjoyed being in nature, hunting and fishing, drawn to the quiet and the simplicity found there. Those moments reflected who he was at heart: grounded, patient, and grateful in life.
Above all, Russell loved his family, especially his grandchildren. His love was not loud, but it was constant—present in his attention, his steadiness, and the gentle way he made room for the people he cared about. His faith was a guiding light throughout his life, shaping the way he loved, the way he worked, and the way he faced each day.
Russell was preceded in death by his father, Billy Clyde Cranford, and his brother, Stephen Clyde Cranford.
He is survived by his daughter, Katelyn Mullen (Aaron) of Columbia; his son, Shawn Cranford of Columbia; his mother, Jean Moody (Don) of Hattiesburg, MS; a sister, Lisa Westmoreland (Keith) of Laurel, MS; four grandchildren; Kenzie Westmoreland, Brantley Westmoreland, Judson Westmoreland, and Ryleigh Givens; and several nieces and nephews.
In remembering Russell, may those who loved him hold close the quiet goodness he carried—his gentle soul, and the steady, hardworking life he lived with kindness and grace.
