

COLUMBIA – Reverend Dr. Albert Lamar Potts, Jr., 83, passed away on Thursday, October 6, 2016. A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 10, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service in Potts Fellowship Hall at the church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel is assisting the family. Born in Newnan, Ga., he was a son of the late Catherine and Albert Lamar Potts, Sr. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1955 where he was captain of the basketball team and lettered in both basketball and baseball. He was inducted into the inaugural class of the Coweta County Athletic Hall of Fame. He served his country for two years in the United States Army. After he returned from the Army he was owner and operator of Ready Mix Concrete and Construction Company in Newnan, Ga. Lamar received his call to ministry and received his master’s degree of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary in 1974 and he later earned his doctorate in 1988. He served at First Presbyterian Church in Donalsonville, Ga. from 1974-1978 and was the first called minister to Spring Valley Presbyterian Church from 1978 until his retirement in 2003. Lamar was a member of the Northeast Kiwanis Club and involved in Trinity Presbytery and many other community projects. He loved fishing, tennis, country music, Atlanta Braves, Georgia Bulldogs and his numerous faithful dogs. Surviving is his daughter, Karyn Taylor and husband Ricky of Blythewood; grandchildren, Courtney T. Turner and husband Barrett, Malcolm Potts, Catherine Burfield and husband, Lance, Tyler Potts and Amber Potts. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ann Manget Potts; son, Malcolm Victor Potts and sister, Harriette Edge.
