

COLUMBIA – Andrew J. Peacock, Jr., 92, died on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at 9:55 a.m. He was a son of the late Andrew Jackson Peacock, Sr. and Sara Dannelly Peacock. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 13, 2017 at Kathwood Baptist Church, with Reverend Beth McConnell officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service. A private family interment at Greenlawn Memorial Park will be at a later time. Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel is assisting the family. Andy was born in Dothan, Al. on November 13, 1924. He attended public schools in Dothan, Al, where he graduated from high school in 1941. He attended Auburn University (API) for two years before his appointment to the Naval Academy where he graduated with the Class of 1947 in June 1946, a member of the 19th Company. His first assignment was in Robert H. Smith (DM 23) in San Francisco, CA, as an Asst. Gunnery Officer. He then attended Mine Warfare School, followed by assignments in Token (AM 126) out of Newport, RI, Partridge (AMS 31) in minesweeping operations in the Pacific Islands and in Japan during the occupation, and Thomas E. Fraser (DM 124) out of Charleston, SC. He resigned his commission in June 1949 to return to Auburn where he earned his BS in chemical engineering. Upon graduation in August 1950, he went to work for Eastman Kodak at the Chemical Division plant in Kingsport, TN. He transferred to Carolina Eastman in Columbia, SC as Asst. Plant Manager in April 1969. He retired from Eastman Kodak as a General Superintendent on July 1, 1986. Andy was called back to active duty in August 1951 for the Korean Conflict. He served as First Lieutenant, Gunnery and Minesweeping Officer on Competent (AM 316) after putting her back in commission. Later, he was transferred to Swallow (AMS 36) as Commanding Officer. He received the Bronze Star with combat designators for operations as Co in the Swallow. He returned to civilian life in 1953. He married Ann Fulton of Cochran, Ga in August 1951. They had three daughters, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In retirement, he and Ann spent their summers at their place in the mountains of North Carolina. Andy was active in civic organizations, such as Kiwanis, Community Chest (United Way), Boy Scouts, Girl’s Club, Junior Achievement, Columbia Chamber of Commerce and the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce. He was a Sunday School teacher for many years, served as Chairman, Board of Deacons and was active in other aspects of church life. In his spare time, he spent as many hours as possible on the golf course. He was able to shoot his age as he progressed in years. Andy is survived by three daughters, Drea (Mark) Bender, Carol (Mike) Braddock and Sara Peacock, all of Columbia; grandsons, Christopher (Miranda) Bender of Columbia and Scott Bender of Old Greenwich, Conn., and a granddaughter, Katie (Matt) Braddock Rabon of Columbia; and four great-grandchildren, Austen, Ian, Catherine and Gracie, who sorely miss their "Da Dah." In addition to his parents, his beloved wife, Frances Ann Fulton Peacock and his grandson, Michael, predeceased him.
