Austin was a naturalist, who was found to be at home on both land or water. He enjoyed being in the mountains, camping, and driving winding mountain roads. He loved fishing on both the Saluda and Congaree Rivers locally and also enjoyed the coastal waters of Yemassee. He loved animals and had a fondness for lizards that he took along with him everywhere he went. He was an honest person who spoke his mind, which made him trustworthy, and you knew when he showed up for you and said he loved you or was proud of you that he meant it. He was a quiet man of few words, which made his laughter genuine, and his happy moments with dimpled smiles cherished memories. He believed in a good, firm, handshake.
He took joy in restoring old things and being able to breathe life into old dirt bikes, chainsaws, tractors, and anything with an engine or moving parts. He loved being able to share his knowledge and helpful tips he had learned with others. He was always quick to lend a hand to those that needed help the most. He was a gentle soul with a warm gooey center that some people had the chance to witness, but good luck to you getting past that firm outer layer. You had to earn your stripes. (And keep them!)
He was a beloved son, brother to six, nephew to eleven, uncle to six, cousin to thirteen, and friend to many. We have a short memorial service on March 8th at Covenant Community Church in Lexington, SC if you would like to join us at 2:00. Our family would love to meet you if you were in his life.
