Bernard attended Galliard Elementary School, Eutawville, SC, Roberts High School, Holly Hill SC, Morris High School, Bronx, NY and Harlem Preparatory School, NYC, NY.
Bernard joined the United States Army in 1976 where he served as a Personnel Clerk and a Medical Specialist (Medic) attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSG/E6). During his career as a soldier his duty stations have been; Fort Stewart, GA, Berlin, Germany, Fort Belvoir, VA, Fort Lewis, WA, Fort Bliss, TX, Fort Kobbe, Panama and Fort Ritchie, MD. He played basketball for the Army at various Posts obtaining the nickname “Bernie Chopper One”.
SSG Lockhart served honorably and received numerous commendations: The Meritorious Service Award, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Commendations Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, and the Drill Sergeant Badge. He was most proud of serving as a United States Army Drill Sgt, where he helped transform 1,000 civilians into soldiers. Many of whom are still serving. SSG Lockhart retired from military service in 1994 but still continued to serve his country and fellow soldiers by being employed with the Department of Veteran Affairs as a Medical Coder where he worked for 19 years.
Bernard loved his family, playing cards, and listening to jazz music. He particularly liked watching Sci-Fi T.V. shows and sports.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Ronnie Lockhart. He leaves behind two daughters, Tiana J. Parrish and Shaina C.M. Lockhart; one granddaughter, Kennede D. Parrish; two brothers, Kenneth Washington and Calvin B. Lockhart; three nieces, Keena Washington, Sabrina Berryhill and Josha'Dee Lockhart; one nephew, Calvin B. Lockhart Jr; one special and close cousin, Linda Washington; an Uncle Paul "Jesse" Washington and all of the children of the late Stephen and Henrietta Davis; and a host of grand nieces, cousins and friends..
Bernard loved to serve. He was called to serve again on April 21, 2021 this time in God’s army. When God calls, soldiers report and soldiers serve.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 30, 2021 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel, with burial in Fort Jackson National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 11:00 until 11:30 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
