

COLUMBIA – Gladys “Kit” Hayes Chamblee, 100, died Thursday, March 8, 2012. Born March 28, 1911 in Anderson, SC, she was the daughter of the late Newton J. and Alice Guinn Hayes.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 11, 2012 at Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church with entombment to follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Rev. John W. Culp will conduct the service. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Mrs. Chamblee was the widow of John Clayton Chamblee. They were married for seventy years. They lived in Spartanburg for thirty-five years and during this time, Mrs. Chamblee was a member of Bethel Methodist Church, the Spartanburg Garden Club and a variety of other organizations. She was the manager of the Kiddie Korner. After moving to Columbia, she was a member of Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her daughter, Peggy C. Tapp, grandchildren, Cheryse and her husband, Dr. Clyde Jordan, Tina and her husband, Terry O. Huffstetler, James L. Tapp, III and his wife, Jody; great-grandchildren, Crystal L. Huffstetler, Taylor Tapp and James L. Tapp, IV all of Columbia. She is also survived by nieces and nephews. Mrs. Chamblee is predeceased by her son-in-law, James L. Tapp, Jr.; brothers, William Hayes, Ralph Hayes and sisters, Lola Smith, Annie Busha, Dora Kay, Helen Coward, Neta Laughlin and Flora Lanier.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation for the loving care and friendship provided by Libby Lighty, Thelma Dennis, Crystal Hawkins, Teresa Gilmore, Christa Hickman and Leila Dixon. The family would also like to thank Dr. Ruben Mayer for his compassion and care.
