Helen Matheson Grant, age 100, died Thursday, June 13, 2024, at NHC HealthCare Parklane in Columbia, SC. Born February 1, 1924, in Stony Point, NC, she was the daughter of the late Roscoe J. and Ora Rector Matheson. Mrs. Grant was a graduate of Stony Point High School and Charlotte Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She loved being a nurse and had a 32-year career in nursing in Statesville, NC, retiring from Davis Hospital in 1989. On March 13, 1947, she married her high school sweetheart, Ballard "Bat" Wilson Grant. They were married for 52 years and lived in Statesville until moving to Columbia in 1999.
In Columbia, Mrs. Grant joined Spring Valley Presbyterian Church, where she made many new friends who remained close throughout her life. She enjoyed cooking and baking cakes; food was a ministry for her. She loved hosting dinners at her home for family and friends or delivering a cake to their door. There were many visits to Columbia over the last 25 years from her sisters, nieces, nephews, and friends from North Carolina. Those times together were some of her happiest. Mrs. Grant enjoyed traveling, reading, playing board games, watching tennis and college basketball, and she was an excellent seamstress. She volunteered her time at church, a local food bank, and Richland County Schools.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ballard Wilson Grant, her son David Matheson Grant, and four sisters: Ruth Matheson Mackie, Mary Edna Matheson, Colonel Billie Gaye Matheson, and Pearl Matheson Bell.
Mrs. Grant is survived by her daughter, Jane Hedden (David) of Columbia, SC; her grandson, Aaron Moore of Rock Hill, SC; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Jane, David, and Aaron extend sincere thanks to family and friends for all the visits, cards, letters, calls, candy, cakes, games, and everything else done to keep their Mom's spirits up. She was well-loved and will be missed.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church, 125 Sparkleberry Lane, Columbia, SC, on Wednesday, June 19th. Visitation will be from 12:00-1:00 pm, followed by the service at 1:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spring Valley Presbyterian Church or to the charity of your choice.
