

COLUMBIA – Ivy Glenn McWhorter died Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at his home in Columbia, South Carolina. Born October 18, 1921 in Greenville, South Carolina, he was predeceased by his father and mother, William Robert and Maude Bagwell McWhorter; his brothers, William Robert McWhorter and Luther Haskell McWhorter and his first wife, Frances Cooley McWhorter. Survivors include his wife, Betty McWhorter; daughter, Janice Cullinan (Tom); five grandchildren, David Glenn Sebring (Paige), Johnathan Mark Sebring (Michelle), Erica Frances Patterson (Walter), Justin Samuel Sebring (Jamie), and Monica Suzanne Sebring; eleven great-grandchildren, Allison Lambert, Elaine Sebring, Kyle Sebring, Sean Sebring, Ian Sebring, Evan Sebring, Cleome Hubbell, Karlyn Hubbell, Jasper Patterson, Logan Johnson, Lucas Johnson; and one great-great-grandchild, Presley Sebring and former son-in-law, Sam Sebring.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Chaudhry Mushtaq and staff of the SC Oncology Center, the staff of National Health Care, Lisa Cureton and Juleta Harris of Tri County Hospice and his sitters, Marlo Revels and Allen Thompson.
Serving in the Navy, the Marines and the Army, he was a Naval Aviator in the Pacific during World War II. Originally retiring as a Major in the Marines, he later served his country again, retiring as Major in the Army. He was always proud that he and his two brothers served in World War II.
Graduating from Furman University, he went on to spend twenty-three years in home offices of insurance companies including Liberty Life in Greenville. He was a member of the Fellow Life Management Institute. Retiring from the South Carolina Insurance Department, he continued to work eight years as an Insurance Examiner for the State of Georgia and then five years for the State of Delaware.
A Mason and a Shriner, he also was an avid Harley Davidson fan having ridden Harleys prior to World War II as a teenager. At the age of eighty, he resumed his riding when he purchased a new Harley.
A member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, the family suggests that memorials may be made to the church, 1715 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC 29210.
Visitation with the family is scheduled for Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 3:30 p.m. at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212. Funeral services will begin at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel with services conducted by the Rev. George Head of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens.
