

IRMO – A celebration of the life of Jack Haigler Hicks, Sr., 84, will be held at 11:00 AM on February 6, 2012 at First Baptist Church of Irmo on Nursery Road. Reverend Clark McCrary, III will officiate the services.
Mr. Hicks died on February 3, 2012. Born in Bamberg County he was the son of the late James Young and Eulalie Wall Hicks. He was a World War II Veteran, having served his country in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific Theater of war aboard the escort ship USS Gunason, earning the American Area Campaign Medal; Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal; Philippine Liberation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Hicks was retired as Engineering Manager/ South Carolina from Southern Bell Telephone Company with 38 years of service. He was a Life Member of the Telephone Pioneers of America serving as a past president. He was a Charter Member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church in Columbia having served on many committees and as a deacon and, subsequently became a member of First Baptist Church of Irmo where he served on the Building and Grounds Committee and most recently supervised the construction of the Family Life Center.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Grace T. Hicks; children, Jack H. Hicks, Jr. (Carole), Cynthia A. Hicks, and Tam Y. Hicks; grandchildren, Jack H. Hicks, III (Melissa), Kelly L. Elizabeth Hicks; great-grandson, Jack H. Hicks, IV and family friend, Celia A. Bowen. He is further survived by his brother, Charles Frampton Hicks and sisters, Annie Margaret Amey, Charlotte Delores Manning, Marian Jenkins Wall Widner, and Alice Marie Inabinet and a host of dearly loved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in death by sisters, Mamie Ruth Hicks, Johnnie Lou Hicks Lay, Hazel Hicks Mills and brother James Richard Hicks.
He will long be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, loyal friend, caring neighbor, hunter, fisherman and mentor to many, but most of all for his outstanding Christian influence.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the First Baptist Church Co-Ed V Sunday School Class. Pallbearers will be: Jack H. Hicks, III, Tommy Stone, Joey Amey, Roger Hancock, Tad Broad and James Ellis.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 5, 2012 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia between the hours of 5:00 – 8:00 PM.
Interment will be at Woodridge Memorial Park, 138 Corley Mill Road, Lexington, South Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Irmo Building Fund, Post Office Box 3027, Irmo, South Carolina 29063.
The family would like to thank the South Carolina Oncology Associates, specifically Ann and Dusty for their extraordinary care over the years and the Palmetto Baptist Hospice Team, Sharon, Kim, Cathy, Sylvia, Jennifer and Jill.
