Jeanie was born on January 19, 1946, in Casper, Wyoming, to the late Lewis Baker and Zelda Cochran. She attended Casper Junior College and later Wichita State University, where she met her husband, Edwin Hanks. Together, they built a life that took them across the country, living in Wichita, Kansas; Kennesaw, Georgia; Tampa, Florida; Florence, South Carolina; and Columbia, South Carolina. Jeanie went on to graduate from Francis Marion University with a degree in Political Science.
She held a steadfast belief that faith leads to salvation. Though she was a member of several churches throughout her life, Mount Paran Church in Marietta, Georgia always held a special place in her heart. As we grieve the loss of her earthly body, we take comfort in knowing this is not the end of her story. She is no longer in pain, but has been made whole—at peace in her spiritual body with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Jeanie was a devoted wife of 56 years and the heart of her home. She never met a stranger—she could strike up a conversation anywhere and leave you smiling or laughing within minutes. She loved being out and about, whether shopping at TJ Maxx or heading to Onelife Fitness for yoga and Zumba with her friends. She was a deeply loyal friend who stayed close with those she loved, including a childhood friend of 75 years. Her love for animals was just as strong, and she gave every pet a happy, cherished life.
She is survived by her husband, Edwin Hanks; her daughters Krista Dorrell, Kortney Denton (John), and Klay Ross. She will be missed by her grandchildren: Devin Denton, Allie Denton, Tristan Ross, Taylor Ross, Christopher Dorrell and her fur baby Kody. She is also survived by her sister, Barbara Stevens, and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her beloved grandson, Connor Allen Stokes.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at the Dunbar Funeral Home at 4219 Hard Scrabble Rd. Columbia, SC 29223. A service will begin at 2:00 pm with visitation to follow.
Jeanie will be remembered for her warmth, her vibrant spirit, and the genuine love she shared so freely with family and friends. Her unique personality left a lasting memory on everyone she met.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite cancer organization in memory of Jeanie.
