Saundra was born on June 30, 1941, to the late Horace and Ruby Toney in Columbia, SC. She was a member of the Dreher High School Class of 1959, during which time she met the love of her life, Lloyd Higbe. They were married on September 2, 1961, and began a wonderful life together full of love for each other and the Lord. The two would go on many adventures, including a cross-country trip during which they were presented with the idea of opening a Christian bookstore. This idea would lead to a legacy of faithful ministry and kingdom service. Through The Living Vine Christian Bookstore, which grew and operated in the St. Andrews area for 26 years, Saundra found a way to minister to everyone she encountered, assisting them in their own walks with the Lord. This dedication echoes in her life verse, John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” Saundra was a true prayer warrior, using this measure of the Spirit she had been given for the kingdom and taking it as her mission. She would pray for those dear to her daily, whether present with them or privately, especially with her dear friend, co-owner of The Living Vine, and sister in Christ, Kitsy Blanchard.
A few of the many joys in Saundra’s life included her loving husband, children, and grandchildren who were very precious to her; spending time in and sharing her mountain home with others and being a part of The Hannah Girls Circle and the church choir. Saundra was a member of the Covenant Sunday School class and was a charter member and integral part of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church.
Saundra is survived by her husband of 64 years, Lloyd Wellington Higbe; son, William Anthony “Toney” Higbe (Candace); daughter, Stacee Higbe; daughter-in-law, Heather Higbe-Hutto; grandchildren, Billy, Hannah, and McKenzie Groome, Maddison and Sophia Higbe, Alexis Morris (Dillon), Mason, Cooper, and Collin Higbe, and Mackenzie Higbe; and great grandchildren, Jasper and Mason Moskal-Groome.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her son, Scott Wellington Higbe; great grandchild, Thomas Old; and sister, Glenda Toney Granger.
A memorial service celebrating Saundra’s life and victory in Jesus will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church by the Reverend Marc Rattray. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 6952 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, SC 29212.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Wellmore of Lexington and MSA Hospice for their care of Saundra during her stay.
