Steffen Martin passed away at the age of 58 from a brain tumor on September 20, 2024 in Columbia, South Carolina. He was born on April 16, 1966 in Chemnitz, Germany where he lived until coming to South Carolina in 1999.
Steffen was a lifelong learner. He graduated from The University of Chemnitz with an engineering degree in electrical engineering and later graduated from the University of South Carolina with a master's degree in International business. He also loved to share his knowledge with others. He was a well-liked and respected colleague at work and excelled in his job in the automobile engineering field.
He was an outdoor and exercise enthusiast. Hiking, biking, and traveling was what made him happiest. Fearlessly did he solo hike most of the Appalachian Trail, Arizona, Florida, and Palmetto Trail. He decided on a whim to ride his bike on the Continental Divide from Canada to Mexico and returned home after six weeks thin, tanned, and happy. He trained and participated in multiple marathons and triathlons. With his natural endurance it was hard for his friends to keep up with him.
But most of all Steffen was a kind and loving person who took care of everyone around him and felt most comfortable surrounded by his family and friends. He loved a good get-together and his annual Oktoberfest was legendary.
Predeceased by his daughter Stefanie. Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 34 years, Jana, his son Sebastian, daughter-in-law Gabrielle, his mother Brigitte, brother Thomas, and his sister-in-law Suzette. Many friends and extended family will feel his absence as well.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm Saturday September 28, 2024 at Dunbar Funeral Home- Northeast Chapel, 4219 Hardscrabble Road. A Celebration of Life will follow the visitation at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers donations to the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University School of Medicine at https://tischbraintumorcenter.duke.edu/ways-give are appreciated.
Steffen will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, and friend. His warmth, wisdom, and joy he brought to every gathering will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
