

Major William E. Kerr, Jr., US Army (Ret.), 91, of Columbia, died Thursday, April 26, 2012. Born July 13, 1920 in Columbia, Maj. Kerr was a son of the late William E. Kerr, Sr. and Mary Donnell Kerr. He attended University High School and Clemson College. While on active duty he served in the 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th Armored Division. Maj. Kerr retired from the 2nd Battalion, 72nd Armored at Fort Stewart, GA on July 31, 1964. He went on to work with The Key Shop for more than 20 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Paula K. (Allan) McCuen of Piedmont, SC; grandchildren, Bill (Beth) Cheshire, Frank (Amber) Kerr, Brad (Christy) Cheshire, and Adam Kerr; great-grandchildren, Christian, Eve, Maddie, Kayla, Zak and Mason. In addition to his parents, Maj. Kerr was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances Shannon Kerr and a son, Charles L. Kerr.
A graveside service for Maj. Kerr will be held at 2:30 o’clock, Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Elmwood Cemetery, 501 Elmwood Avenue, Columbia, with full military honors. The Rev. Dr. George D. Crow, III will be officiating.
Memorials may be made to Northeast Presbyterian Church, 601 Polo Road, Columbia, SC 29223. The family would like to thank the staff of McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville for their kindness during Maj. Kerr’s illness. Shives Funeral Home of Columbia is assisting the family.
