Albert Weir Degenaar, 91, of Columbus, Georgia, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2026. He was born on September 22, 1934, in Albany, New York. As an infant, Albert moved with his family to the Panama Canal Zone, where he spent his childhood and graduated from high school.
In 1952, he returned to the United States to attend Georgia Tech, where he participated in the Army ROTC program and lettered in track. After graduating in 1957, he served two years of active duty as a Radiological Safety Officer with the Army Detachment. Following his military service, Al built a long and accomplished career as a manufacturing engineer in the electronics industry, working in Maryland, Tennessee, Texas, and Florida. He concluded his career with seven years in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Al will be remembered for his easygoing nature, quick sense of humor, and unwavering loyalty to his beloved Georgia Tech Yellowjackets. He had a well-known sweet tooth; he was a true connoisseur of all things dessert and chocolate. He had a penchant for woodworking—often crafting beautiful furniture—and a love for travel and adventure, especially cruises. Above all, he was devoted to his family and grounded in his faith as a member of Central Baptist Church in Columbus.
An active man throughout his life, Al enjoyed running and swimming for many years. While living at Spring Harbor, he found joy in Wii Bowling and chair volleyball. In quieter moments, he could often be found reading a good novel, whether in fiction or science fiction, or working on a puzzle.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Jessie (Weir) Degenaar. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Judith (Angley) Degenaar; his sons, Albert (Stephanie) and Peter (Gabrielle); and his granddaughters, Lia Degenaar and Krista (Ian) Emerson. He is also survived by his sisters, Joan (Jerry-d) Durfee and Lynn (Earl-d) Boland; his sister-in-law, Penelope Angley Bennett; and six nieces and nephews. In accordance with his wishes, no burial service will be held at this time.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Spring Harbor on Saturday, April 25, 2026 from 2-4 pm to remember Al and the happy times they shared. All are welcome.
His ashes will rest in the foothills near Lenoir, N.C.
