Alice Burgess Hanna, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away on July 2, 2018. She will be greatly missed by all. A memorial service to celebrate her life was held on July 5, 2018 at 3:00 in the afternoon with Reverend Scott Tucker officiating in the Mill Room at Striffler-Hamby, Columbus, Georgia. Family visited with friends after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution to the American Red Cross. A lifetime blood donor, Alice was especially active in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo, providing assistance to volunteer crews by locating rural families in need of shelter and supplies. Alternatively, a gift in her name to the Sea Turtle Conservancy (seaturtle.org.) which organizes local volunteers to guard nests and hatchlings, and educates the public on responsible use of our nation’s beaches, would be appreciated.
Alice Burgess Hanna was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 24, 1922 to Yorke Burgess and Louise Haynes Burgess. When she was two, her family moved to Crystal River, Florida. Alice grew up during the Great Depression. Times were tough for the Burgess family; her parents raised their five girls to be resourceful and to appreciate the basics of living during the Depression. Alice attended Crystal River High School where she met Joe Hanna. They both played basketball and graduated from Crystal River High, where Alice was valedictorian of her class. During WWII Alice worked as a weather observer at the Raleigh-Durham airport. Alice and Joe were married for 72 years. They spent most of their working life in South Carolina where Alice worked in the post office, the center of her rural community. After retirement, the couple moved to St. Augustine Beach, then to the Columbus, Georgia area. Alice was a member of First Presbyterian in Phenix City. Alice loved to spend time with family and enjoyed swimming, golf, birdwatching and traveling. She volunteered for the American Red Cross, the Sea Turtle Preservation Society and the Adult Literacy movement. Alice taught her children by example to live life to the fullest, to be compassionate, care for others and love one another.
Alice Burgess Hanna is survived by her husband Joseph L. Hanna; her children: Gail McNair (Nick), Cecile Goding (Dave) and Yorke Hanna (Barbara); her grandchildren: Hanna Webster (Clark), Joshua Goding, Alison Whitley (Josh), Noel Hanna, Joseph Hanna and Lilly Hanna; her great-grandchildren: Emma Webster, Ross Webster, Jake Whitley and Elizabeth Whitley, and her sister-in-law Jess Dixon.
