Mrs. Schultz was born April 12, 1917 in Hunter River, Prince Edward Island, Canada. She was the daughter of the late Mrs. Hazel Jane Houston Beaton and Mr. Samuel Ernest Beaton of Mayfield and Hunter River respectively. Because of the early and untimely death of her mother, Alma Beaton (Houston) Schultz and her sister Helen Myra Beaton (Houston) Beasley were reared by their kind and loving aunt and uncle, Ernest and Ethel Houston, who also reared the late Mr. Charles “Foster” Sellar.
Although Alma Schultz was born on Prince Edward Island, she spent several of her early childhood years in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan, where her father moved the family in order to find work. By the age of seven she had returned to Prince Edward Island where she grew up surrounded by wonderful loving relatives. She moved to New York after graduation from High School and married Gustave Peter Schultz in 1940. They were married for 55 years. They lived in Mount Vernon, NY for many years, and then moved to Harrisonburg, VA in 1983. While living there she attended church with her daughter, Dr. Joyce Schultz, at First Presbyterian Church, Harrisonburg, VA.
In 2006 she moved to Georgia so that her daughters could care for her as she grew older. In 2008 she moved into Franciscan Woods, Columbus, GA, an assisted living facility, where she enjoyed the company of many other seniors and was cared for by loving staff members. After suffering two broken hips she lived with her oldest daughter, Helen, for almost four and one half years until the time of her death. While living with her daughter she attended the Freedom Care Center where she was dearly loved. She also attended Sunday School and services regularly at Piney Grove Baptist Church, Fortson, Georgia.
In addition to rearing her own five children, Mrs. Schultz cared for many foster children as well as many elderly persons in her home over the years. She supported her husband in his many endeavors in Christian Ministry. She was an avid reader and maintained an active interest in world affairs.
Preceding her in death are her husband, Gustave Peter Schultz; her son, David Peter Schultz; her sisters, Helen Myra Beaton Beasley, Evelyn Jane Isabel Beaton, and Eunice Mildred Beaton Searles; brother, John James (Jack) Beaton; and her son-in-law, Dr. Robert Douglas Peterson.
Surviving Alma Beaton (Houston) Schultz is her sister, Mrs. Hazel Jean Beaton Stevenson, Greenwich, CT. Others include daughters, Dr. Helen S. Peterson, Cataula, GA; Dr. Joyce A. Schultz, Hamilton, GA; Ms. Hazel Jane Schultz, Fleetwood, NY; and Mrs. Sallie Ann Hansen, Westfield, IN. Related to her by marriage are her son-in-law, Torrey A. Hansen and her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth (Lisa) Schultz. Mrs. Schultz has four grandchildren; Robert Scott Peterson, Piperton, TN, Torrey Andrew Hansen, III, Chicago, IL, John Wellington Adams, Staunton, VA, and Jennifer Esther Hansen, Westfield, IN. Her granddaughters by marriage are Angela Peterson, Amy Hansen and Rachael Adams. Mrs. Schultz was the proud great grandmother of four great granddaughters, Rebecca, Abigail, and Natalie Peterson, and Leah Elizabeth Hansen. She had eight great grandsons, Robert Samuel Peterson, Andrew Torrey Hansen, IV, Harmon Fox Hansen, Luke Hansen, John Dominick Adams, Andrew Scott Peterson, Gannon John Adams and Jon Luke Peterson. Many cousins, nieces and nephews reside in the USA and in Prince Edward Island, Canada. They will remember her as a sweet and caring lady who loved her Lord!
