

Arthur Cody Southerland October 14, 1920 - September 18, 2010 COLUMBUS, GA — Arthur Cody Southerland, Jr., 89, of Columbus died Saturday, September 18, 2010 at St. Francis Hospital. Graveside funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Tuesday, September 21, 2010 in Parkhill Cemetery with Reverend Billy Wells officiating, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, GA 31907. The family will receive friends Monday evening, September, 20, 2010 from 6:00 PM Until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Mr. Southerland was born October 14, 1920 in Houston County, AL, son of the late Arthur Cody Southerland, Sr. and Sara Julia Buckhalt Southerland. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII and retired from Columbus Consolidated Government as Superintendant of the Motor Transport Department. He was a proud member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, helping build roads, parks, and later served as a Regional Secretary in the 1980's. Mr. Southerland was also a member of Gentian Baptist Church. We will remember his integrity, quiet dignity, generosity to others, dedication, and constant love for his family, but his memory will live forever in our hearts. In addition to his parents, Mr. Southerland was preceded in death by a brother, Paul J. Southerland, and two sisters, Janie "Nell" Southerland Ellis and Louise Southerland. Survivors include his loving wife of 69 years, Viadus Faye Southerland of Columbus; two sons, James E. Southerland and his wife, Regina of Gainesville, GA, and Bobby Southerland, Sr. and his wife, Markie of Valley, AL; four grandchildren, Shelley Ann Southerland Hill and her husband, Rick, Mary Elizabeth Southerland Honeycutt and her husband, David, Bobby Southerland, Jr. and his wife, Brittany, Kelli L. Southerland, and Erica McLain and her husband, Curt; ten great grandchildren, Caroline, Jameson, Braden, Alex, Zachary, Mary Emma, Molly Elizabeth, Taylor, Mackenzie, and Allison; numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.
