Barbara was born in Columbus, GA, to J. Quinton and Mimi Davidson. After high school, Barbara attended Duke University where she met the love of her life, Lee H. Henkel, Jr. – a law student, Duke Drum Major and jazz trumpeter. Barbara graduated with honors from Duke, was a Sigma Chi Sweetheart, and was an Alpha Delta Pi (her sister, two daughters and two granddaughters are also ADPi’s). After graduation, Barbara and Lee moved to Columbus, GA, to raise their family and for Lee to practice law. After a brief stint in Washington, D.C., where Lee served as the Chief Counsel of the IRS, Barbara and Lee moved to Atlanta in 1973 where Lee practiced law at Henkel & Lamon.
All of her life, Barbara’s first priority was to her family and friends – helping her husband with his successful law practice, raising three children and being involved in the community. Her community involvement included the Junior Leagues of Atlanta and Columbus, Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, Historic Columbus, Atlanta Symphony – to name a few. Barbara particularly loved the Timothy Class at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church and the many dear friends she made at Lenbrook. Barbara also loved flowers, her gardens, entertaining, cooking and family meals.
Barbara is survived by her sister, Joan Mize Holder; her children: Lee III (Barbara) Henkel, Lynn Henkel, and Cathy (Charles) Wilson; her six grand children: Tyler (Alison) Henkel, Oliver (Morgan) Henkel, Barbara (Ben) Stubbs, Hampton Wilson, Lee Carter Henkel and Traci Wilson. In addition, Barbara was very proud of her five great grandchildren; Tyler, Ted, Michael and Graham Henkel and Abigail Stubbs and was blessed with many nieces and nephews. Barbara was well-loved and will be missed.
Funeral Services for Barbara Henkel will be Wednesday, December 16, at 11:00 a.m. at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church in Atlanta. A reception will follow at Lenbrook on Peachtree. On Thursday, December 17, there will be a graveside service for the family at Parkhill Cemetery in Columbus, GA, and a visitation from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. at Barbara’s sister’s home – Joan Holder – in Columbus. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Senior Ministry at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church in Atlanta.
