A lifelong resident of Columbus, Barbara grew up in Dinglewood, attended Wynnton School and graduated from Columbus High school in 1939 where she was a cheerleader and voted most popular girl in her senior class. She briefly attended Mary Washington College before marrying the love of her life, Zeno Donald Hunter, Jr. (Don) on December 30th, 1939. They were married for 69 years when he passed away in December of 2008.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clara Lee Holleman Ingram, and Dana Thomas Ingram, her sister, Regina Ingram Woodley Patton, her brother Dana Thomas Ingram, Jr., her brother, Alva Holleman Ingram and her daughter Jane Regina Hunter who both died in infancy.
As a young woman she worked for the First National Bank and became a Red Cross volunteer during World War 11. In 1945 her husband purchased a children’s clothing store, Wee Moderns on Wynnton Rd. She became a willing partner in the business for twenty two years until it closed. As the principal buyer and store merchandiser she showcased her talent by designing appealing display windows every month. She possessed a real eye for color, balance and style. The role she cherished most, however, was that of being a wife and mother. She enjoyed her home where she gardened and loved bird watching, sewing and painting. Living through the depression as a child, she learned early to recycle and repurpose items. Her motto was “do the best you can, where you are, with what you have.”
She also enjoyed going to their beach condo for many years where she loved walking on the beach and watching sunsets from the balcony with Don.
She was a member of the Magnolia Garden Club, the Columbus Country Club, and was active at Trinity Episcopal Church in her younger years as a member of St. Elizabeth’s guild.
She will be remembered by those who knew her throughout her long life for her loyalty, integrity, beauty and devotion to her family.
She is survived by her daughters, Lynn Hunter Griley and Ann Hunter Crotts and son-in-law Dexter Crotts all of Atlanta, Georgia. Also, a step grandson Alan Crotts and his wife Rosemary and their daughters, Rosemary Diana Crotts and Sarah Jo Crotts.
She loved her many nieces and nephews and especially her dear friend and devoted caretaker, Barbara McGlaun.
Our family is especially grateful to the nursing staff at Spring Harbor.
A funeral service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church on Thursday, November 30, 2017 at 2:00pm. Burial will follow at Parkhill cemetery.
