Funeral services will be held at 11am, Friday, April 15, 2022, at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery, Fort Mitchell, AL.
Burt was born April 2, 1950, in Terre Haute, IN, to the late Wayne H. Davis and Ruth Eleanor English Davis. Burt grew up farming and loved the land. He attended the University of Illinois before enlisting in the Army in 1970. The Infantry Officer Advanced Course brought him to Columbus in 1983, and here he stayed. He served his country well for 25 years. He also served his customers and his community well. He drove an 18-wheeler for a while, developed software, and he owned and operated his own home improvement business. Burt was a talented woodworker.
He was also an avid outdoorsman and knew how to live off the land better than anyone. He loved mushrooms – hunting them, cooking them and eating them. Burt will long be remembered on Fort Benning as the sage of all things related to the care and nurturing of wildlife populations, and he introduced many soldiers and veterans to the best hunting lands around. He was a charter member of the Fort Benning Hunting and Fishing Council, and generations of sportsmen will benefit from his tireless efforts to protect native ecosystems and invigorate healthy wildlife populations. He helped establish the annual Hunting and Fishing Open House and worked countless hours year after year to make that event a success.
Burt was quiet but never shy. He had a libertarian streak and strong opinions, but he mostly kept his peace and never had a bad word to say about anybody. He was as good as gold. He had a sharp, dry wit, and it was delightful to hear him laugh.
Burt loved his tractor and his dog Toby. More than anything, he loved his girls, Ann and Nikki. He always claimed to love Jesus, and he made Him his savior later in life, so if you didn’t know Burt, you should plan to meet him in heaven. His brother, Charles “Chuck” Davis, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his loving wife of 38 years, Anna E. Davis, and his daughter, Briana (Nikki) Davis, both of Columbus; a sister, Elizabeth “Libby” Nash, of Illinois; his fur baby Toby; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Immediately following the graveside service at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery, the family would like to invite everyone back to the Mill Room of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary for a reception in honor of Burt.
