Carl was born to Martha Johnson Spillman and Carl Malbert McAuley, Sr. on February 2, 1927 in Columbus, Ohio. He was the oldest of eight children. After high school, Carl faithfully served his country in the United States Army, serving during World War II and the Korean War. After retiring from the Army, Carl went to work with the United States Postal Service. After his second retirement, Carl wasn’t one to stay retired for long. He served his community through volunteering until he was 93 years old. He volunteered for the Columbus Visitors and Convention Center, Columbus Sports Council and with the 1996 Summer Olympics. He loved serving his country and community.
Carl married Chieko Anzai who he met while stationed in Japan after World War II. They had a daughter and two sons. They made Columbus, Georgia home after his retirement from the Army. Carl was a huge Ohio State Buckeye fan. He loved his family and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his daughter, Pamela S. Bunch and her husband, Anthony; his grandchildren Matthew B. Bunch (Melissa Duncan) and Tara M. Henderson (Martin); great grandson Maddox M. Henderson: his sisters Ruth Parr and Betty Farley; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife Chieko Anzai McAuley, his sons: Richard C. McAuley and Robert S. McAuley; his parents Carl M. McAuley, Sr. and Martha J. Spillman; his sisters: Mary Cann, Edith Carver, and Ella Collister; and his brothers: Jack McAuley and Raymond Spillman.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Wednesday April 27, 2022 at 1:00 PM in Parkhill Cemetery 4171 Macon Road Columbus, Georgia 31907. Carl’s family will visit with family and friends after the service at the graveside.
