Columbus , GA- Charles Alfred Henry, 86, of Columbus died on November 5, 2012 at Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital in Phenix City, Alabama.
Funeral services for Mr. Henry will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, November 9, 2012 in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary 4071 Macon Road Columbus with Reverend Helen Berenthien officiating.
Visitation for Mr. Henry will be from 5-7 pm, on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at the funeral home.
Mr. Henry was born January 27, 1926 in Chattanooga, Tennessee son of the late Mabel Walker Henry and Alfred Selman Henry. He grew up in Lafayette, GA and graduated from Lafayette High School. He attended North Georgia College, Dahlonega, GA and the University of Chattanooga. He has lived in Columbus since 1955.
He was the owner of Tri City Cleaners in Phenix City for nearly 20 years. He retired from the Home Building business in Columbus. He was a member of the Columbus Home Builders Association. He was a former member of the Phenix City Rotary Club, and the Country Club of Columbus. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and the Shaw Sunday School Class.
He loved the game of golf and his hobby was growing vegetables and flowers.
Mr. Henry was a US Navy Veteran of World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater of War and was one of the first service men to occupy Hiroshima Japan after the Atomic Bomb was dropped.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Martha Henry, sons, Steve Henry and his wife Janice of Columbus, Pat Henry and his wife Catherine of Atlanta, grandson, Jonathan Henry and a brother Dr. J. William Henry of Corpus Christi.
