A graveside service to celebrate Dan’s life will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 23, 2021 in Parkhill Cemetery with Father Emanuel Vasconcelos officiating according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, GA 31907. The family will receive family and friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The service will be livestreamed on the funeral home website at www.shcolumbus.com and on the Facebook page at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary at Parkhill Cemetery.
Dan was born February 1, 1949 in Elyria, OH, son of Gloria Lyon Camp and the late Robert Jacob Camp. He was raised and educated in Michigan. Dan attended Flint Junior College where he played baseball. He was selected as an All American and Junior College Player of The Year in 1969. He later transferred to Columbus College, now Columbus State University, on a baseball scholarship. After receiving his education Dan served his country in the Marine Corps. Dan was inducted into the Columbus State University Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996. He was a teacher and baseball coach at Glenwood School where he was instrumental in developing their baseball program. Dan also coached at Columbus High School. After a successful career as a Human Resources officer in Hospital Administration, he retired to Edgewater, FL, to be close to his Mom.
In addition to his father, Dan was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; sister-in-law, Linda Davenport. Survivors include his mother, Gloria Camp; three sons, Danny Camp and his wife, Skye, Robbie Camp, and Kevin Camp; four grandchildren, Jordan Camp, Payton Camp, Caden Camp, and Carson Camp; two sisters, Susan Camp and her husband, Mark Toy, and Bonnie Baumgartner; four sisters-in-law, Margaret Swisshelm and her husband, Bruce, Flo Sumner and her husband, Gatling, Laura Smith and her husband, TJ, and Terri Brown and her husband, Dave; one brother-in-law, Steve Davenport; one aunt, Joann Jenkins; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In keeping with the efforts to control the spread of COVID-19, social distancing guidelines will be followed. Facemasks are required at the visitation and graveside service.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that a donation be made in memory of Dan to the Columbus State University Athletic Foundation, Attn: Dan Camp Baseball Scholarship, 4225 University Avenue, Columbus, GA 31907.
