Doris Hester McGehee Hamilton

Funeral services are scheduled at the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus on Monday, April 12, 2010, 11 a.m. with Reverend Scott Hagan officiating. Interment will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, April 11, 2010 from 3-5 p.m.

Mrs. Hamilton was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1920 and spent most of her childhood in Waverly Hall, Georgia, where she met and married the love of her life, Carlton W. “Sam” Hamilton in November 1941. She graduated from Waverly Hall High School and graduated from Young Harris College in 1939. She later attended Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia.

After employment at Wilson Company, she stayed at home to raise their children while Sam worked for the Federal Aviation Administration. They moved to Miami, Florida where Mrs. Hamilton worked part time doing inventory at Burdines Department Store. Sam and Doris were among the founding members of Miami Springs Methodist Church and enjoyed pro football as season ticket holders for the Miami Dolphins and vacations in the Florida Keys, Waverly Hall, Georgia, and the mountains of North Carolina. After Sam’s death, Doris moved to Gainesville, Georgia where she was a member at Gainesville First United Methodist Church. She served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels while living in Gainesville and enjoyed traveling with the Gadabouts.

Mrs. Hamilton was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sam who passed away in 1984.

Survivors include two sons, Rick Hamilton and his wife Caroline of Reston, Virginia, and Bill Hamilton and his wife Peggy of Thornton, Colorado; a daughter, Patti Schade of Peachtree City, Georgia; two sisters, Marian Krygier of Columbus, Georgia, and Janet Patterson of Reynolds, Georgia; four grandchildren, Eric Oliver and his wife Mary Beth of Plano, Texas, Kristin Price and her husband Nathan of Sharpsburg, Georgia, Karina and Alex Schade of Peachtree City, Georgia, and one great grandson, Hudson Oliver of Plano, Texas..
