
Gary Alan Hughes, age 60, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, November 17, 2010. Graveside memorial services will be held at Parkhill Cemetery on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at 11:00 AM, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 233 12th St # 710, Columbus, GA 31901 or to P.A.W.S., P. O. Box 8964, Columbus, GA 31908.
Gary was born on February 2, 1950 to the late Daniel Walter Hughes, Jr. and Mary Ann Smith Hughes. Gary attended public schools in Columbus, graduating from Hardaway High School in 1968. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Emory University with a major in history. Upon graduation from Emory University he attended the University of Georgia, where he earned his Juris Doctor. He worked at a law firm in Columbus for a short while before moving to Atlanta where he accepted a position with the State of Georgia Court of Appeals as a law clerk to Judge Birdsong. Later in his career he was employed by the Georgia Supreme Court and worked in the office of Supreme Court Justice Carley.
Gary retired in 2007 and returned to Columbus to be near his family. He enjoyed remodeling an older house in the Historic District and filling it with beautiful antiques. Gary loved all animals, especially dogs and usually had one or two. He also made sure the birds and squirrels always had plenty to eat. Gary made friends with several of his classmates at Emory and he stayed in touch with them over the years. He was loved dearly by his family and friends and will be dearly missed. He was preceded in death by his father, Danny Hughes.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Ann Hughes of Columbus; two brothers, Ken Hughes of Columbus and Brian Hughes of Fredericksburg, VA; three nieces, Megan Hughes, Mallory Hughes and Morgan Hughes, all of Columbus.
