

Hans J. Peters, M.D., F.C.A.P, age 84, passed away on November 3, 2011. Memorial services will be held at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Rd., Columbus, GA on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 2:00 PM.
Dr. Peters was born on October 21, 1927 to the late Bruno and Editha Peters in Berlin, Germany. After receiving his M.D. from the Free University Medical School in Berlin, Germany, Dr. Peters trained in pathology at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Duke University Medical School and the Medical College of Georgia where he was chief resident in 1956. From 1957 to 1967, Dr. Peters was a faculty member in the Department of Pathology at the Medical College of Georgia.
He was the director of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at St. Francis Hospital. During that time, he also served as a consulting pathologist for many hospitals throughout Georgia and Alabama. Dr. Peters has also held positions in the academia, having served as a professor of Medical Technology at Columbus State University and a visiting professor of Pathology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.
Dr. Peters' dedication to the College has spanned more than 30 years. As a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists, Dr. Peters represented the State of Georgia in the House of Delegates from 1971 to 2004. In addition, Dr. Peters was a member of the Commission of Anatomic Pathology, chairman of the CAP Autopsy Committee and a liaison from the Council on Laboratory Accreditation to the CAP Transfusion Medicine Resource Committee. Dr. Peters also served as a liaison to the American Association of Blood Banks Inspection and Accreditation Committee, Standards Committee, and the AAB Parentage Testing Committee.
Through the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, Dr. Peters has served as the Georgia State Commissioner (1969-1976), Gulf Regional Commissioner (1977-2000), and the Deputy International Commissioner for Civilian Laboratories. In 2006, Dr. Peters received the Major General Joseph M. Blumberg, CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program Service Award.
In addition to his service with the CAP, Dr. Peters was an active member of several professional associations, including the Georgia Association of Pathologists and National Association of Medical Examiners. He also is a member of the International Academy of Pathology; American Association of Blood Banks; American Medical Association; Medical Association of Georgia and the Muscogee County Medical Society. Dr. Peters was a diplomat of both the American Board of Pathology and the American Board of Forensic Medicine.
Survivors include his daughter, living in Costa Rica, Leslie Ballard and her son Drake and living in Fortson, GA, Rebecca Taylor and her husband Keith and their children, Dylan and Georgia; and his special friend and colleague, Dr. Mae E. Allen of Columbus, GA.
