Hazel Elizabeth Barnes Tidwell Waggener died on June 24, 2016 in Columbus, GA. She was born to the late Mary Lillian and Gus Barnes on February 6, 1933 in Newnan Georgia. She married Charles M. Tidwell on Easter Sunday, 1953, a marriage that lasted 48 years until his death in 2001.
Known as a ‘gentle soul’ to all, family and friends were most important to Hazel. She was especially close with her sisters and had many lifelong friends who will miss her kindness. She crocheted beautifully and was absolutely devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren. Sadly, because of her battle with Alzheimer’s, she didn’t get to know her great grandchildren but she would have been equally as loving. She loved to play cards and board games, especially word games. She taught all of her grandchildren to play Scrabble and would always let them win. She was an excellent cook and it was well known that if you were at Hazel’s home, she would serve you food if you stayed more than a few minutes. She was a member of Midland United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles, and her brother, Wally Barnes.
She is survived by her husband, Vance Waggener; a son, Steve Tidwell and his wife, Debbie, Montgomery, TX; a daughter, Lynne Tidwell Phillips and her husband John, Midland, GA; grandsons Ryan Tidwell (Michelle), Edmond, OK and J.T. Phillips, Jr. (Carra) Midland, GA; granddaughters Lauren Schwarze (Jon), Montgomery, TX and Mallory Phillips of Midland, Georgia; four great grandchildren, Charles M. Tidwell, II; Matthew Tidwell; Addison Schwarze; and John Thomas Phillips III. She is survived by her sisters Louise Sewell, Newnan, GA; Brenda Cartledge, Blairsville, GA; and Gloria Griffin (Jesse) of Milledgeville, GA, and sisters-in-law Sara Phillips and Betty Wortham (Harvey), Newnan, GA; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by many members of Vance’s family.
Funeral services will be held at Striffler Hamby, Tuesday, June 28, 2016 with Reverend Stephen Brinkman officiating. Visitation is at 10am, service at 11am and lunch in the Mill Room will follow. A private graveside service will be held at 1:15pm.
