

Memorial services will be 1:00 pm Saturday, April 30, 2011 in the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary in Columbus, where the family will receive friends.
Henry was born on March 12, 1943 to the late Henry Byrd Sr. and Gracie Belton Byrd of Camden, SC. His formative years were spent in Camden and Greenwood, SC.
In 1960 he graduated from Brewer High School in Greenwood. He went on to attend Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC where he pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. After attaining his BS in mathematics there, he furthered his education by attaining an MBA from Louisiana Technical University and an Associates Degree in Computer Science from Columbus State University.
Henry (Hank) Byrd’s career included twenty-six distinguished years in the United States Air Force, including serving in the Vietnam War and at the Pentagon. After retiring as a Lt Col, Henry worked for over twelve years in the Columbus community. He is remembered for his services at Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS), American Express, and the Urban League.
He was preceded in death by his sister Mrs. Jennie B. Haygood. Henry leaves to cherish his memory three loving children: Monica (David) Farmer, Brian (Margie) Byrd, and Richard Byrd. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Miles Farmer, Cameron Farmer, Kylie Byrd, and Evan Byrd; brother-in-law Roy Haygood; nephew Roy “Bill” Haygood; Bettye Byrd mother of Monica and Brian; Addie Byrd mother of Richard; and a host of other relatives and friends.
