Columbus , GA- James Roland Kirkland, 86, of Columbus passed away on August 1, 2014, at Gentiva Hospice.
Mr. Kirkland was born January 5, 1928, in Lakeland, Florida to the late William Perman Kirkland, Sr. and Callie Zipperer Kirkland. In addition to his parents, Mr. Kirkland was preceded in death by his brothers and sister: Marvin Eugene Kirkland, Kenneth Cleon Kirkland, Grover Carlton Kirkland, Ludie Lee (Kirkland) Welch, and W. P. Kirkland, Jr. He is also preceded in death by his great-grandson, James Trigg Heider.
Mr. Kirkland, a resident of Columbus since 1962, served his country in the United States Army during World War II, the Cuban Crisis, as well as serving two tours of duty in Vietnam. He enjoyed researching his genealogical family history. Additionally, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife: Ruth Ann (Croft) Kirkland, two sons: James Michael Kirkland and his wife Cathy (Trigg) Kirkland, and Richard Alan Kirkland, one sister: Letha Mae (Kirkland) Blake, one granddaughter: Elizabeth Cathleen (Kirkland) Heider and her husband Ryan Marx Heider, one great-grandson: Griffin James Heider, one sister-in-law: Hillevie (Ewerts) Kirkland, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Mr. Kirkland will be held from 12:30 PM until 2:30 PM on Wednesday, August 6, 2014, at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus.
Graveside services for Mr. Kirkland will be held at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, August 6, 2014, at Parkhill Cemetery with Chaplain Wayne Holloway officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gentiva Hospice, 2425 Williams Road, Columbus, GA 31909, in memory of James Roland Kirkland.
