Born on March 4, 1944, in Upatoi, Georgia, John’s life was marked by determination and vision. He set his sights beyond his hometown and proudly enlisted in the United States Navy.
John’s distinguished naval career spanned more than 20 years. A true sailor at heart, he served aboard the USS Kitty Hawk, completed tours in Guam, and was stationed at North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego. As a dedicated Company Commander, he shaped and mentored countless recruits, holding them to high standards while preparing them for service. He retired honorably with the respected rank of Chief Petty Officer. In the Navy, it is often said, “The Navy has many ranks, but only one Chief.” John embodied the Chief’s Creed, serving as a steady leader and trusted mentor.
Following his retirement from the Navy, he continued his life of service for nearly 20 years with the California Department of Corrections in San Diego before retiring once more.
Beyond his career, John was a pillar of his family. He was the beloved and devoted husband of Toniann Kimbrough. He is also survived by his cherished sisters, Martha, Lula, and Catherine.
He was a proud and dedicated father to John Jr. (Keena) and Stanley Kimbrough (Anette), along with their mother, Princella Woods; Jonathan Kimbrough and his mother, Linda Thornton; Tonisha Kimbrough; Rashan (Allyson) and Rickiem Dopwell. His influence and guidance live on in each of them.
John’s legacy extends through his many grandchildren—Dominique (Madison) and Dimitri Kimbrough, Johannes Kimbrough, Jonathan Kimbrough Jr, Kendra Houston, Mackenzie and Ravyn Dopwell, Rickiem Jr. and Cruz Dopwell, Marcel Price Jr., and Jayani Haynes—and through his great-grandchildren, Johan Kimbrough, and Kasey Kimbrough. He was also a cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie and Dorthy Kimbrough; his daughter, Dale Charles; his sisters, Dora and Roberta; and his niece, La Shaun.
Those who knew John understood that he was firm in principle yet rich in humor. He held high standards, spoke directly, and loved deeply. He coached baseball in his younger years, remained a devoted sports fan, and valued physical discipline throughout his life. His presence brought strength and stability to all who knew him.
