Waverly Hall, Georgia- SFC (Ret) Johnny J. Vessell, Sr., 86, of Waverly Hall, GA passed away Thursday, September 18, 2014 at Columbus Hospice House. He was born in Walker, LA on December 14, 1927 to the late John and Myrtle Vessel. Johnny retired from the Army after 22 years of honorable service and received numerous awards and medals to include the Purple Heart (w/5 Btl stars); Korea Service Medal and Korean Presidential Unit Citation; and Vietnam Service Medal. He was a member and Deacon of Eastway Baptist Church.

Visitation will be Friday September 19, 2014 6:00-8:00 PM in the Wildwood Room of Striffler-Hamby, 4071 Macon RD. Columbus, GA. A Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 1:00 PM in Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby followed by a Committal Service with Full Military Honors at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery on St. Mary's RD. Columbus, GA with Rev Michael Heath and Rev Lewis Brown officiating.

SFC (Ret) Vessell is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Sadie Vessell; three sons, Johnny Vessell, Jr., Charles Vessell, and Carl Vessell; two daughters, Barbara Lytle and Kathy Schlicher; twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
