Laura was born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, to Alicia Perez Alejandro and Jorge Luis Alejandro on October 12, 1952. She attended elementary and middle school in Fayetteville, NC, and graduated in 1971 from Gabriela Mistral School in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Guided by her deep passion for education, Laura earned her Bachelor of Arts from the Inter American University of Puerto Rico in 1975. She later continued her studies at the State University of New York at Albany, where she received her master's degree in Bilingual Education.
Laura dedicated three years to Herman Badillo Community School in Buffalo, New York, where she served a diverse student body, primarily those who were from Hispanic backgrounds. She later joined the New York State Education Department's Bilingual Program, becoming instrumental in developing the state's Bilingual Education initiatives. She earned recognition in her development of grants and proposals that brought vital resources to schools serving economically disadvantaged Hispanic communities throughout the state of New York.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Laura had a love for teaching children -especially her nieces and nephews that fondly knew her as their Titi Nina-about her Hispanic culture through books, storytelling, and art. Art was her lifelong passion, and she shared it generously with those she loved.
Laura is survived by her siblings-Eddie, Jorge, Gary, Jatzmin, Norma, Nora, Myrtha, Carmen, and Gilberto—as well as Bryan (BooBoo), who loved her like a second mom. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and countless extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alicia Perez-Alejandro and Jorge Luis Alejandro, and by her siblings, Hector and Maria Alejandro.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date for family and friends. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who loved her so deeply, just as she endlessly loved everyone throughout her long, full, and beautiful lifetime earthside.
