Born in Marvel, AL on November 7, 1925, Lucy knew from an early age that she wanted to be a nurse following in her Aunt Rossie’s footsteps. Her early education was in Marvel before she attended West Blocton High School, leaving after the 11th grade to attend Howard College in Birmingham, AL. She graduated from the Carraway Methodist School of Nursing in 1947. During her career as a registered nurse she worked at Harris Memorial Hospital in Birmingham, AL, Carraway Methodist Hospital in Birmingham, AL, Saint Francis Hospital in Columbus, Hughston Clinic, and Cobb Memorial in Phenix City. She finished her working career as a rehabilitation specialist.
Lucy was active in Republican politics from grassroots efforts to holding numerous positions in the Muscogee County, Third District, and Georgia Federation of Republican Women organizations including vice chairwoman to the Republican Party of Georgia as well as an alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention. Always willing to fully support the various civic clubs and organizations to which she belonged, she assumed leadership roles in each. As a supportive mother she served as den mother for both the Boy and Girl Scouts. Her children’s teachers could always count on her for baked goods and chaperoning duties. Lucy was a devoted mother who provided unconditional support and love to her children.
She learned to cook at an early age, pulling a chair up to the stove so her mother could make dresses for her. Developing into a wonderful cook, she enjoyed preparing meals for her family. Always a gracious Southern lady she loved to entertain friends; her fun-loving, caring nature, and wonderful sense of humor made her a joy to be around. Lucy was a natural beauty. Shopping was a passion which was evident in her perfectly coordinated outfits, including jewelry and shoes and her weekly visits to the hair salon ensured she looked stunning whenever you saw her.
Love of family and country along with her strength, devotion, and resilience are a tremendous legacy she leaves her children and family.
The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at Brookside Glen who so lovingly cared for our Mama and Gentiva Hospice for their support this past week; also our heartfelt thanks to her longtime friend and cohort in adventures, Bettie Willingham, and faithful friend Rosemary Collier.
The family requests no flowers but donations to Gentiva Hospice, 100 Brookstone Centre Parkway, Columbus, GA 31904 would be gratefully appreciated.
