Maj (RET) John William Rogers, Jr. was born July 21, 1933 in Washington, D.C. to John W. Rogers and Velda F. Rogers. John grew up in Norfolk, VA and after graduating from Granby High School, he attended the University of Virginia on a golf scholarship where he lettered. He was drafted during the Korean conflict and made the Army his career, serving 20 years before retiring in 1973.
It was while he was attending OCS at Fort Benning, GA that he met his wife, Betty, who he lost to cancer in 1997.
After his retirement from the Army, John and Betty moved to Columbus with their four children. John attended Columbus College where he earned his MBA. He later went to work at Columbus College working in the Financial Aid Office and retired as Director of Financial Aid in 1993.
John was a member of Northside Baptist Church. He loved the game of golf, playing as often as he could, and traveling, with Ireland and Israel being two of his most memorable trips. Genealogy was another passion that he spent many years researching and documenting the family history.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and his wife, Betty.
John is survived by his children, Steve Rogers (Peyton) of Memphis, TN, John Rogers (Caroline) of Fort Worth, TX, Mark Rogers (Carol) and Shara Smith (Steve) of Columbus, GA; grandchildren, Elyse Hall (Adam) of Auburn, AL, Miranda Rogers of Astoria, NY, Stephanie Rogers of Marietta, GA, Michael Smith (Kristen) of Columbus, GA, Wesley Rogers (Val) of Fort Worth, TX, Cassidy Rogers, Kristen Richardson and Kyle Johnson (Christa) of Columbus, GA, and Sam Heidel (Amy) of Caddo Mills, TX; great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Addison, Sarah Ruth and Charlotte.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, December, 22, 2020 at the Chapel of the Pines Mausoleum, Parkhill Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Speer officiating,
