

Margaret A. (Peggy) Matthews died on June 8, 2017, of natural causes. A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 11, 2017 from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary on Macon Road, in Columbus. A Mass will be held at St Anne Catholic Church, on Monday, June 12, 2017 at 11:00 am, 2000 Kay Circle, in Columbus. Interment will be in the Parkhill Cemetery after Mass.
Born in Brooklyn, New York on March 26, 1923, Peggy was raised on Staten Island and graduated from Tottenville High School in 1941. She worked for a while as an operator for the telephone company. She met the love of her life, James during World War II. They married after the war and moved to Wisconsin. Her four children were born there. In 1955, the family moved to Georgia, first to Decatur, then Columbus in 1970.
Peggy enjoyed golfing and spending time with her family. She attended St. Anne Catholic Church where she participated in the Altar Society, the CCW, the Prime Timers and the community Outreach program. She was also active in the VFW auxiliary as well as the Elks organization.
She was preceded in death by parents, Daniel Doris and Mary Mitchell Doris, beloved husband, James J. Matthews, five sisters and one brother.
She is survived by her brother Daniel Doris, of Freehold, NJ, and her children, daughters Dorothy Hill (Jerry) and Patricia Kelley (Michael), sons Harry Matthews (Donna) and John Matthews (Renee), 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Anne Catholic Church, 3502 Kay Circle, Columbus, GA, 31907.
