Maria Fernandez

Maria Fernandez, age 87, resident of Columbus, died on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at Vista Care Hospice Facility. Funeral Mass is scheduled at Holy Family Catholic Church, 320 12th Street, Columbus on Friday, July 27, 2012, 10 a.m. with Father Frank Patterson officiating, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus. Interment will follow at Meriweather Memory Gardens, Manchester, GA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, July 26, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. Mrs. Fernandez, daughter of the late Juan Portieles and Lutgarda Machin, was born May 31, 1925 in Yaguaramas, Cuba. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and worked over 14 years for Goody Products, Manchester, GA. Mrs. Fernandez was a founding parishioner of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, Manchester, GA. She is preceded in death by one brother Ibrain Portieles. Mrs. Fernandez is survived by her husband of 51years, Ed Fernandez of Columbus; one daughter, Silvia Ugalde of Flushing, NY; two sons, Dr. Ed Fernandez and his wife Dr. Cynthia Fernandez of Pine Mountain, GA and Dr. Agustin Suarez of New Orleans, LA; three grandchildren, Alex Fernandez, Greyson Fernandez, and Jocelyn Smith and her husband Craig Smith, all of Columbus; two great-grandchildren, Dylan Smith and Logan Smith, both of Columbus; one brother, Ismael Portieles and his wife Hayde Portieles of Cuba; other relatives and friends.
