

Visitation for Mr. Pharis will be held at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Macon Road, on Sunday, August 7, 2011 from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM. Funeral service will be at Striffler-Hamby Chapel on Monday, August 8, 2011 at 1:00 PM with Dr. E. D. Helton, Jr. officiating. Private burial will follow in Parkhill Cemetery.
Mr. Pharis was born on July 26, 1936 in Louisville, KY to Mr. & Mrs. Mark Pharis, Sr. Mr. Pharis retired from Glover Food Service (formerly Gallman Distributing). For over 40-years he was a member of Morningside Baptist Church and Sunday School where he served several terms as a Deacon, a Sunday School Teacher and for over 20 years as a volunteer kitchen coordinator. After retirement Mr. Pharis was an active member of the St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary where he enjoyed serving as a volunteer, selling goodies from the Cheer Cart. He was known as “Candy Man.”
Mr. Pharis was preceded in death by his parents Mark R. and Nellie Pharis, Louisville, KY. Mr. Pharis is survived by his wife of over 51 years, Carrie Frances “Fran” Sloan Pharis; two children Mark R. Pharis, III (Christine) of Midland, GA and Dr. Lisa P. Allardice (Brian) of LaGrange, GA; two grandchildren, Emily Sloan Allardice and David Mark Pharis. He is also survived by two brothers: Robert Pharis of Louisville, KY and William Pharis (Mary Jo) of Birmingham, AL; a brother-in-law Thomas Sloan (Nadene) of Hixson, TN; three aunts Mrs. Jean Goins, Louisville, KY; Mrs. Bessie Shannon , Nashville, TN; and Mrs. Dora Rixman, Louisville, KY, as well several nieces and a nephew.
Our thanks and appreciation to our friends for their prayerful support during this difficult year. A special thanks to our wonderful medical support team: Dr. Joseph Lewis, Dr. Andrew Pippas, Dr. S. A. Roddenbery, Dr. William Macheski, John B. Amos Cancer Center, VistaCare Hospice and the entire St. Francis Hospital staff, cardiac rehab and volunteers.
Floral arrangements will be accepted or donations in his memory may be made to Morningside Baptist Church, St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary, or John B. Amos Cancer Center.
