Michael Neil Herndon passed away on December 22, 2022 at Spring Harbor in Columbus. Mr. Herndon was born on December 3, 1939 in Brooks County, GA, the son of Harry Eston and Irma McMillan Herndon. He attended Thomasville High School, where he was a member of the Debate Team. He graduated from Washington and Lee University, Lexington, VA, and earned his LLB from the University of Georgia School of Law. After service in the United States Army, including a tour in Korea, he practiced law in Thomasville, and served as a Georgia State Senator from District 10 from 1972 to 1975.
In Columbus Mr. Herndon was Human Resources Director of the North American Denim Division of Dominion Textile, Inc., including Swift Textiles, and later practiced in the field of benefit management with Flowers and Herndon. He was active in the Rotary Club of Columbus, serving as president in 1989-90. He was also a past president of the Big Eddy Club.
Mr. Herndon is survived by his wife, Jane; his sister Marlene H. Jordan, his niece Ashley Lawver, and nephews John Jordan and David Jordan.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in the Chapel with Reverend Buddy Cooper officiating. Family will greet guests after the service at the church. A private family burial will be in Parkhill Cemetery.
