

Murray Carson Jones died Sunday morning at Columbus Hospice House after a short illness. Funeral services are scheduled at Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby, Columbus on Friday, July 29, 2016, 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Riverdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, July 28, 2016 from 5-7 p.m.
He was born in Marion County, Georgia to Samuel Howard Jones (1901-1976) and Wilda Lou Wall (1900-1982). Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian Cutchen (1921-1953) and second wife, Vernice Louise Cordle (1928-2004); two sons, Billy Donald Jones (1941-1941) and James Murray Jones (1947-2005); two brothers and four sisters. He is survived by one brother, Andrew Jones ; one son, Stanley Paul Jones (Mona); two daughters, Gwendolyn Frances Smith (Russ) and Katherine Louise Applewhite (Jim); numerous grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Carson worked at logging, in the CCC camps, and served in the South Pacific in WWII. After the war, he worked for Swift Textiles, drove a city bus, and worked as projectionist for Martin Theaters. He also did theatre stage work for many years and was proud to work in craft service for the movie Tank, filmed at Fort Benning. In his later years, Carson received great joy from drive cars for local car dealers, and was able to continue driving into his nineties. He was a special man to many and will be greatly missed.
